The Structural Basis of Neurodegenration

The Structure and Function of Membrane Proteins, studied by Cryo-EM

Research

The laboratory of Henning Stahlberg, University of Basel, is employing high-resolution electron microscopy to study neurodegeneration, and membrane protein systems. To this end, the group is developing imaging technology in the areas of sample preparation and data analysis software systems such as focus-em.org, dynamo-em.org, and openbeb.org. Stahlberg has studied various membrane protein systems by cryo-electron microscopy over the last decade, and has characterized water and ion channels, transporters, and secretion system membrane proteins, as well as protein aggregation (alpha-synuclein). The work of Stahlberg has been recognized by the NSF Career Award (USA).
